Greek Orthodox Wedding: Matt & Dena

When I haven’t shot at a specific location before, couples are often interested in whether or not I want to (or need to) see a particular spot before the wedding day. I’ve gone back and forth on this because I definitely see the value of preparation – and sometimes it’s just a flat out necessary.

That being said, I love the experience of seeing something for the first time.

I read about psychological theory a long time ago that has always stuck with me. The concept is about how the first time you enter a room is the time you’re most sensitive to it’s unique attributes. Things jump out at you more when you’re new to a space. The longer you’re in the room, the more things start to become normal. The unique elements begin to fade.

Matt and Dena’s wedding was at the the Greek Orthodox Cathedral, which was a new space for me. From the gold dome outside to the beautifully and intricately decorated interior, the Cathedral is stunning and fun to photograph.

But this theory seems to apply to people just the same, and that’s what I really love. Most of the couples I work with are fairly new to me. As such, there are things that make them, as well as their families, unique and special that I see right away. Things that I get to document throughout their wedding day.

For Matt and Dena the examples were countless. They’re so grateful for the people around them. So caring. So giving. So humble.

We did a first look to get the nerves out and yet Matt still had tears as Dena stole his breath away one more time walking down the aisle at the beginning of the ceremony, grateful to be marrying such an amazing woman.

And the toasts… Listening to family members share about how great these two are was moving. Watching Dena and Matt respond was even more so.

The whole night was filled with laughter and dancing as the families came together to celebrate two beautiful and wonderful people. I’ll never forget watching the overwhelmed smile on Matt’s face that he just couldn’t contain every time he looked over at his new bride, Dena.

Congrats, you two!
